Roller Derby

It is a sport that is alive and well here in Iowa! I got to see it first hand at a little girls night.. Everything you can imagine about the players and crowd that attends is completely true. I know what you're picturing right now in your mind and you got it. Spot on.
It was the groupon deal a few weeks back her in Des Moines and a few of us got tickets for last saturday night. We actually know one of the players on one of the teams. She is the wife of an Elder in the stake presidency. No Joke. After Brett convinced me to go (I was freaking out about the terrible weather and was sure it would mean doom to leave the house), You know it was a party. I even bought a cow bell. 8 Mormon mommas cheering on the derby girls in all of their glory. Oh, and its gotta be a party when THIS guy is there. Or the announcer looks like this. I tried to get more pictures of just the amazing crowd that attended but I think I looked to conspicuous and had to stop.

I can't explain the rules at all to you. I thought I was getting the hang of it maybe during the first game, which seemed to more low key players....like a junior varsity. But, when the main team (like the IA professional all American league) got up there to play I was shocked! Even the crowd got...errr, rougher. Drunks and potty mouths everywhere. I heard more profanity in half n hour than I had my entire life. Somethings I didn't even know what they meant. I figured the best way to get them to stop was by talking to them (they were right next to me) and asking them to explain the game to me. Haha. Kind of worked actually.

Anywho, it was an awesome night with great company. We battled tornado like winds and flash flooding just to be there. At one point the lights went out in the arena and I am pretty sure we were all scared for our lives. I was having scary thoughts of dark corners. Seriously though, one of the best girls nights ever.

Oh, and I will be trying out for the 2013 Roller derby season. =)
